- I routinely engage in global public engagement with a wide range of audiences. I have a commitment to and record of accomplishment in third mission activity and civic/public engagement. Communicating research to both academic and non-specialist audiences is an area in which I have proven experience, notably that derived from my extremely successful ‘Sparks’ Award, which was launched by the Clore Duffield Foundation to support innovative Jewish cultural, educational and development projects and initiatives outside the Greater London area. The award led to the establishment of the North Wales Jewish Network that has promoted awareness of Jewish issues in North Wales and beyond. This was complemented by a Beacon for Wales and AHRC collaborative doctoral (with the Cardiff Reform Synagogue) awards, all of which have facilitated extensive public engagement, communication and understanding of North Wales Jewish history and culture.
- I have demonstrated leadership in taking research into a public context. My work on Stanley Kubrick, on the one hand, and the stereotyping of Jews, Jewishness and Judaism in contemporary global media, on the other, influences public understanding of challenges facing minority ethnic and religious cultures and communities, impacting on civil society, cultural life and public discourse. Through numerous essays, appearances in regional, national and international media – particularly following the discovery of Kubrick’s ‘lost’ Burning Secret screenplay, and extensive public speaking to the general public and global diaspora since 2008, my work enhances regional, national and international public awareness of contemporary media’s representations of ethnic minorities and stereotyping. His presentation of cultural heritage helps to preserve and conserve it while increasing understanding of social /cultural identity and encouraging social inclusion.
- As a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, and of the Royal Historical Society, I contribute to both Societies’ work, including policy work, public engagement activities, governance and future election processes. I also raise the profile of the society) locally, nationally and internationally.
- I am regularly asked to speak at the annual Limmud Conference every December (as well as the smaller weekend/day Limmud events dotted around the world, including Australia, Bulgaria, Denmark, South Africa, Sweden and the UK). Limmud is widely recognised as one of the major Jewish global conferences, attracting approximately 2,500 people from around the world. Few other conferences offer such an opportunity for both outreach and impact among the public as well as academics.
- I am often approached to give popular presentations and public lectures in such venues as synagogues, local history organisations, schools, adult education conferences, seminars and film festivals.
- I am regularly consulted by media outlets such as the BBC, S4C and other bodies and broadcasts in Welsh and English on issues to do with his ethnic minority status (e.g. the Holocaust, antisemitic discrimination).
- I write regularly for such publications as The Forward (USA) and Ha’aretz (Israel) and have helped to establish a new platform: JewThink.org.
- I have presented talks at Festival No. 6, organised such public facing events as 40 Years of Alien, 2001: Beyond 50 the only event of its kind in the UK to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of this landmark film, and helped to curate Jewish History Month 2019 for the Jewish Historical Society of England on the theme of ‘Big Screen, Little Screen: Jews in British Cinema and Television’ at which I also presented.
- Other local impact activities have been led by me under the 2019 ‘Llandudno Winter Light’ festival in collaboration with the Mostyn Gallery, as well as working on the Walking Jewish History Project with Menter Fachwen, Llandudno Museum, and other partners.
- I was appointed the first Director of Impact and Engagement for the College of Arts, Humanities and Business at Bangor University where I was responsible for overseeing the completion of the College’s REF Impact Case Studies, currently numbering over 15 individual drafts covering four Units of Assessment. I am also working towards formulating initiatives to encourage greater engagement, innovation and impact among research active staff.
- I supplied an impact case study for UoA33/34 in REF 2014.
- I have considerable expertise in drafting impact case studies over a variety of Units of Assessment for the REF and am well placed to assist in the delivery of new ones for REF 2028 having built up a considerable store of knowledge and experience.
